The marionette is a classical form of puppet. As it is a complete figure, operators often enjoy the solo nature of the piece developing some superb acts which are compelling to watch. The theme this year is very loose and set around notions of 'gender'. As this course is also part of the Diploma it is at professional level.
Students explore different means of suspending the figure, there are regular operating classes and tutorials, solo and group sessions. The students are principally researching and making a solo piece, devising their own rehearsal process and performing in local schools and for Living Room Theatre.
Students develop their skills of writing and creating original work for the puppeteer, puppet making, set design and building, running their own rehearsal process and audience studies.
Some shared accommodation is available in the house or sometimes with "godmothers"
of the school who also have rooms available in the village. This is not a residential course and students may stay wherever they choose. Some students book bed and breakfast accommodation in the village of Grassington. All meals are taken as part of the life of the group where ideas might be shared and discussed.
The first and last dates of the course are always travel days, often with the first introductory session on the first evening after travelling.
* To apply for this course you are required to have completed our Marionette Carving course, or own a suitable marionette, please ask for further details if you would like to use your own.
