Breadlines and Pillow-Talk

This page aims to outline what it is like to be in Yorkshire. How can the London School of Puppetry be in Yorkshire for a start?

In the beginning it was an experiment to try out teaching in a small village, instead of North London. A group of students came to Yorkshire from London as guinea pigs, produced work and took it into two local schools, a primary and a secondary. At first, the modules were split between London and Yorkshire, gradually the Northern centre developed a particular character with the external examiner commenting on the way the experiment was producing a creative community. What the students have said is that they can learn faster and better if they are in a place where they can concentrate exclusively on puppetry. For awhile we also attracted more local students who were glad not to have to uproot themselves and go to London.

Where do students stay? This has differed at different times in the life of the school. Students in the past have rented holiday cottages together, others splashed out on a Bed and Breakfast, some have stayed in the Bridge End House, some have stayed in the homes of supportive local people, some have camped, some have lived in a caravan.

The puppeteers based in Yorkshire, if they do not all live together, the sharing of meals has always been a very significant part of the course wherever they might be sleeping. The students organise a rota and everyone takes a night to make an evening meal. We have enjoyed Japanese, Korean, Mexican, French, Spanish, Greek food as puppeteers produce their favorites. Some puppeteers are requested to make the same meal over and over again because it has become a favorite. This page will  grow as students past and present share their not so secret recipes.  Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Emma's Bread and Puppet Theatre Ice-cream.

Melt a bar of chocolate stir into it spoonfuls of crunchy peanut butter. As it cools, make into small cherry-sized lumps and leave to get cold. Stir the hardened lumps of into vanilla icecream. Leave to refreeze until needed.

Hella's Lemon and Thyme Chicken.

Tip chicken thighs and small potatoes into a roasting tin. Pour over plenty of olive oil. Sprinkle over the chicken a mixture of grated lemon rind, fresh or dried thyme, lemon juice and a little salt and leave to roast.

Caroline's Accidental Cheese Melt.

Put into a dish such as a quiche dish a variety of cheeses all good sized pieces as for a cheese board- including smoked cheese. Place inside a freezer bag and leave to freeze until needed. When required, remove from freezer bag and place the whole dish of cheeses into the micro-wave and cook for a few minutes until the cheese has melted. Serve with crusty bread and soup.
