Caroline Astell-Burt has developed a particular type of puppet controlled by the head of the operator giving freedom to the puppeteer to create movement of the arms and legs of the puppet. This type of "head control" is based on otome-bunraku a Japanese type of puppet usually only operated by women.
Otome bunraku is traditionally performed only by women, (any gender may apply for this course) and was originally invented by Hayashi Jiboku to enable one woman to operate one of the large bunraku puppets familiarly manipulated by three men.
The special technology to make the operation of the puppets feasible allows the puppets to apparently “float” in front of the puppeteer.
The course is practical, involving you in operating, devising and performing. You will be able to achieve an understanding of how to perform the LSP puppets, you will be able to go away and start to create your own.
Your Course tutor Caroline Astell-Burt has been developing Otome-bunraku style puppetry at London School of Puppetry since 2009. She has taught it regularly at summer schools for women in France over the past three years. She went to Hitomiza in Japan for field study where she was able to watch rehearsals and performances and observe the operating techniques.
